Spot Removal Tips

Generally speaking, we recommend two basic initial treatments for removing spots. However, something to remember when spot cleaning, never scrub the carpet. Scrubbing can cause stains to get trapped in the fibers and will matte the pile.

Removing Type 1 Stains

For type 1 stains mix one teaspoon of mild detergent with one cup lukewarm water. Dip clean cloth into solution and gently blot the spot; continue until no more spot remains. This group includes:

Body Fluids and other Biological Contaminants including Animal urine,
Blood, Egg, Vomit etc.

Food based products including Alcohol, Beer, Wine, Candy, Ice Cream,
Chocolate, Milk, Cocktails, Coffee, Tea, Gelatin, Soft Drinks, Syrup,
Water Stains etc.

Misc. substances including Bleach, Glue, Permanent Wave Solution, Soot

RemovingType 2 Stains

For type 2 stains apply a small amount of dry cleaning solution* or solvent-based spot remover for clothing* to the spot then blot; continue until no more spot remains. This group includes:

Oil based substances including Butter, Motor Oil, Cooking Oil, Ointments
and Linaments, Grease, Shoe Polish, Tar, Wax, etc.

Coloured or Dyed products including Colognes and Perfumes, Lipstick,
Nail Polish, and Cosmetics, Crepe Paper, Fruit Juices, Food Stains, Inks,
Paint, Stains and Water Colors, Medicine, Household Cement, Metal
Polish, Chewing Gum, other unknown stains

Hints to Help Prevent Permanent Stains

Clean spots and spills immediately, the fresher the stain the easier it is to remove.

Scrape up semi-solid substances with a round spoon or dull knife. Blot liquids with clean while cloths, paper towels or tissues. Avoid brushing or rubbing. "Blot" means to firmly push down on the cloth and allow time for the spill to be absorbed.

Start from the edge of the stain and work toward the center, this will avoid spreading the spot. Use small amounts of spot removal solutions, blotting occasionally with clean white cloths to absorb any excess. Use just enough cleaning solution to wet the stained area, avoid over wetting or soaking the carpet.

Since some materials are not colourfast be sure to pre-test spot removal solutions in an inconspicuous area of the carpet. To pre-test, apply a few drops of the cleaning solution on each color of the carpet. Hold a clean white cloth, paper towels or tissues on the wet area and hold for about 10 seconds. Lift it and check for dye transfer and examine the carpet for discolouration. If the dye bleeds or the carpet appears changed, do not use the solution, and call Complete Carpet Care for help.
